Do you know what to do if your dog or puppy gets into something they should not? First aid for Poisoning
This article came from PetPlace.com. Something that we might never think about. How many other things might we have that our pets can get into that would be toxic???? Food for thought.
Hi Michaelene , We received this interesting story about a two-year-old Brittany spaniel named "Crawford".
This story reminds us that dogs will eat just about anything...
Crawford's poisoning wasn't a case of raw food, but rather "bra food". Crawford had a little snack of gel inserts from his owner's bra... and this sent him to the veterinarian's office with some uncomfortable gastrointestinal issues.
"I was running late for work and changing and I didn't shut the drawer all the way," said Tara Claxton of Camp Hill, Pa. "When I got home from work, half the bra was gone. The veterinarian said there was no blockage, but that the gel from the pads may have been mildly toxic. He put Crawford on a special diet and after a few weeks all of the bra passed and his appetite returned.
Needless to say, all my bras are tucked away in a drawer and won't be left out again."
This just goes to show you that we never know what a dog will do and that an unforeseen emergency can happen at any time. | |
This article is from Pet Place also, something else we may not think about. Today - I want to talk to you about a very serious emergency that is becoming more and more common. It is caused by what we call expandable water-activated glues. One common brand is called 'Gorilla Glue". This is a great product - works really well for gluing but is a disaster when ingested by dogs.
Take a look at this x-ray. This is a dog laying on his side - and that big round mass object (arrows) is the stomach full of glue. When the glue is ingested - it is activated and expands when in contact with water. It becomes a rock hard mass that cannot be digested - vomited or passed on. The only option is surgical removal
Antifreeze PoisoningAntifreeze is a common poison. It has a sweet taste and pets will consume it readily. A little more than 3 tablespoons could be lethal for a 22 pound (10 kg) dog.
Antifreeze poisoning causes nervous systems signs and severe kidney failure. It can be fatal if not treated very soon after ingestion (within 4 to 8 hours). Pets that have ingested antifreeze may act "drunk" within 30 minutes to 12 hours after ingestion, depending on the amount ingested.
